A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday as a bridge over the Indrayani River near Kundmala village in the Maval region of Pimpri Chinchwad collapsed, leading to fears that multiple people may have been swept away. According to preliminary reports from the Pimpri Chinchwad Police, at least six people are feared dead, while 5 to 6 individuals have been rescued.
🚨 Bridge Collapse During Monsoon Rains
The collapse occurred in Kundmala, a well-known tourist spot that typically sees heavy footfall during the monsoon season. Reports suggest that around 15 to 20 people were on the bridge when it gave way, plunging everyone into the river below. The strong river current is believed to have swept several of them away.
Local sources estimate that 10–15 individuals are currently unaccounted for.
🔎 Massive Rescue Operation Underway
Rescue efforts were swiftly launched by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) along with local authorities. Eight people have been rescued so far, and efforts are ongoing to locate two women reportedly trapped under the debris. Emergency teams continue to search for survivors despite challenging weather conditions.
🗣️ PM Modi and CM Fadnavis Respond
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on a visit to Cyprus, was briefed on the incident by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The Prime Minister expressed concern and support for the ongoing relief efforts.
CM Fadnavis said in a statement,
“I have spoken to the Divisional Commissioner, Tehsildar, and Police Commissioner. Some people have been injured and taken to hospitals, while others are feared trapped. NDRF teams are on-site. As of now, we cannot confirm casualties. We are awaiting verified information. The administration is making every possible effort to provide relief.”
⚠️ Orange Alert Issued for the Region
The incident comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in hilly and ghat regions. The area has seen intense rainfall over the past 48 hours, which may have contributed to the structural failure.
🗨️ Leaders Urge Caution
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule addressed the tragedy on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“A bridge over the Indrayani River at Kundmala in Maval Taluka has collapsed. There are fears that citizens may have been swept away. I pray for the safety of all those affected.”
She added that she had spoken to the Pune District Collector and assured that all necessary assistance was being dispatched.
Sule urged the public to exercise caution during monsoon outings:
“Please strictly follow all safety guidelines during the monsoon. I appeal to everyone to stay safe and avoid risky areas.”
